🪦 RIP to the virtual currency mixer Tornado Cash
Crypto commentators have both mourned and celebrated the alleged death of Tornado Cash.
But what exactly do these currency mixing platforms even do?
To give a quick rundown, services like Tornado cash allow users to deposit funds into their protocol anonymously, and withdrawal the funds without revealing their origin.
According to Decrypt, “Users send cryptocurrency to the service, have that crypto mixed with other coins or tokens, and then send the equivalent amount of “mixed” coins to a recipient address, hiding the connection between the sender and recipient.”
Sound illegal? Well, it can be, depending on what country you’re living in.
When it comes to ethical concerns, the verdict is equally dicey— people aren’t quite sure what to make of services that aim to provide anonymity, especially when large amounts of money are involved. Like, billions of dollars.
There seems to be two camps of people, each boiling down their argument into two differing conclusions:
Promotors of privacy find these tools necessary, as they provide anonymity through mixing funds and concealing their origin.
Those in charge believe coin mixers are dangerous tools that allow criminals to launder dirty money.
Regardless of which side you find yourself agreeing with, the US government has began a crackdown on these services.
By including Tornado Cash on the official OFAC list of sanctioned entities, it is effectively illegal to interact with the code within the US.
A 29-year-old was arrested in Amsterdam after his suspected involvement in creating Tornado cash, and it seems there may be more arrests on the way across the globe.
When it comes to currency mixing platforms, government officials have clearly shared their distaste, but those seeking privacy don’t want to say goodbye to services like Tornado Cash. Only time will tell if these platforms will stick around.
